  Advanced Underwater Lab

Owned by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and managed by the University of North Carolina at Wilmington (UNCW), Aquarius operates 4.5 kilometers offshore of Key Largo, Florida. The underwater laboratory is deployed next to deep coral reefs, 20 meters beneath the surface. Aquarius provides life support systems that allow scientists to live and work underwater, in reasonably comfortable living quarters, with sophisticated research capabilities.

Aquarius is an 82-ton double-lock pressure vessel that measures approximately 14-meters long by 3-meters in diameter.

Nautical Charts

The bathymetry of the North Pacific Ocean as shown on some very interesting nautical charts, features deep sea basins and trenches such as the Northwest Pacific Basin (with depths over -10,500 m) to the south of the Kamchatka Peninsula, and the Aleutian Trench (with depths over -8,000 m) just south of the Aleutian Islands. Shallower regions are found along the continental shelves and the marginal seas. Nautical charts are produced for marine navigation. They contain information on all navigational aids, such as buoys and beacons, lighthouses, radio and radar stations, shipping channels, restricted areas. Some charts are issued with Loran-C plotting grid s or great circle sailing tracks. Water depths are recorded as soundings, in meters, feet or fathoms.
